This pair of old Wiking promotional models sold by Volkswagen dealers
in the 1960s might not, at first, appear to be anything special.
The promo models that you see, the 1500 wagon and the Karmann Ghia,
are both original from the VW dealer that Jim Groeneweg received
them from in
the late 1960s. Jim tells he had a newspaper route and the VW dealer
was a customer. One day the
salesman gave Jim a handful of them as he was collecting them. Jim
says, "Needless to say I
was happier than a clam and also was the start of my 1/87 scale collection.
It took me a long time to discover that they were that scale mind you,
but
when I did and the detail and accuracy was that good, I was hooked!!
The
rest is history as they say." Pretty significant models wouldn't you
say?
